Abstract
The presence of Hormuz Salt at the base of the sedimentary column in the Zagros basin has considerably influenced the occurrence and evolution of existing petroleum systems. Movement of Hormuz Salt principally influenced the paleo-depositional environments during the geologic time which in turn defined the sediment distribution patterns and facies variations. Additionally, movement of Hormuz Salt considerably influenced thermal maturity of source rocks and migration of generated hydrocarbons. Salt movement created withdrawal synclines, which acted as potential kitchen areas for hydrocarbon generation. Intense expulsion of generated hydrocarbons occurred in these withdrawal synclines and resulted in lateral migration of petroleum towards adjacent highs. Salt halokinesis results in creation of various types of traps in the sedimentary cover and hence the Hormuz Salt movement could considerably influence the accumulation of petroleum in the Zagros basin. Last but not least, Hormuz Salt movements influenced preservation of the petroleum accumulations in the Zagros basin because salt movement destroyed the closure or obliterated the trapping capacity in some of the structures.
